TRCN to integrate NEI Plus reading materials into teacher training programs

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria has revealed plans to integrate the Mu Karanta! Let’s Read! teaching and learning materials of the USAID-funded Northern Education Initiative Plus into its teacher training programs.

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the council, Professor Josiah Olusegun Ajiboye revealed this when the management of Northern Education Initiative Plus led by the Acting Chief of Party, Nurudeen Lawal paid the council a courtesy visit on Tuesday, March 5, 2019.

Ajiboye said the integration of the teaching and learning materials, developed in both English and Hausa languages will help produce quality teachers and sustain the interest of the out-of-school children brought back into schools by NEI Plus.

“There is need for well trained, qualified and competent teachers to retain the children NEI Plus is bringing back into schools, and the use of these reading materials by teachers will help achieve this goal,” he said

He also emphasized the need for both the council and NEI Plus to work collaboratively to address the problem of poor-quality teachers in schools by creating career paths that will enable teachers at the federal and state levels to succeed.

Acting Chief of Party of the Northern Education Initiative Plus, Nurudeen Lawal commended the council’s effort to transform Nigeria’s education sector, adding that the integration of the Mu Karanta! Let’s Read! materials into teacher training programs will further expose teachers to the importance of early grade reading in schools.

He also noted that the shortage of quality teachers is negatively affecting education in Nigeria and that the council should support states in addressing their teacher supply issues.

“When the issues around the quality of teachers are addressed, most of the problems in Nigeria’s education system will be solved,” he said.

The Acting Chief of Party also made a presentation of some NEI Plus materials to the Executive Secretary. The materials presented include English and Hausa Versions of the Mu Karanta! Let’s Read! Teacher’s Guide and Pupil’s Book, video compilation of NEI Plus activities, roll-up banners and project’s success stories.
